Tai's talk with Avalon may seem a bit out of character for what's been established so far, but it's not him being selfless or anything. It's him advocating his rebellion against authority.

Amulet of Reprieve: Priority skill; mark any character; target becomes immune to damage for the following two rounds. However, if combat is ongoing at the end of the 2nd round, the amulet explodes. The explosion deals mixed Fire/Celestial damage equal to the total damage absorbed to the target, and 20% to nearby allies. Any other Amulets of Reprieve caught in the blast will also explode immediately.
