You don't have to freak out and buy it now. If your friends play it too they most likely play on a different server.

Well, every MMO has bearded men playing a naked women. Stay away from them. They'll be the ones having secret sex chats you can't see.

FFXIV Online was the original game. They blew everything up in huge war with fire and made it into FFXIV: A Realm Reborn because the oroginal was trash.
This is all explained in the opening cutscene.
