The copies appear in some kind of bluish vortex... They have some memories though, which means they are actually confused.
Goombario: "Where am I? I don't recognize this place?"
Greater Dog: "I found seven friends! You guys wanna pet me?"
Delibird: "I was giving presents to other Pokemon and now... I'm here..."

(Just pointing out that the NPCs will be dispatched randomly if you didn't ask for a specific one to be in your party.
You might even end up going solo.
The NPCs will be placed in parties when Pie decides which objective he's picking.)
