More on stuff you can do... And locations. Each time unit, you'll be able to pick a location to visit. Who knows what may happen there!?
...Usually, more or less exactly what you'd expect.
Special actions *Healing: To heal HP or stamina, you have two choices. Head home and treat yourself for a small recovery, or head to the hospital and pay to recover a larger amount.
*Contact an NPC to meet-up (requires their information).
Locations (more will be added over time) Uptown: Apartments, Cajun-Creole Clamshack, Suburbs, Grocery
Midtown: Library, The Bar, Florville Service and Repair, Police Station, Park, Pet Store
Downtown: Grande Theatre, General Hospital, Herald main office, Lyptus Investigative main office
Industrial Sector: Dragonturtle Chemical Plant, Rickenduffle, Inc. main office, Power Plant
Outskirts: University, Spooky Woods, Farmland, Fairground, Cliffs

OK! X. Your character sheet's up. Go over it, make sure you like it all, and tell me when you're ready for the last step: Starting Inventory. You've got $9,000. You tell me sort of thing you want, I'll tell you how much it'll run you. It's a modern setting, so... you can get your hands on about anything. You can assume you've got basic stuff like... I dunno. Frying pans and bedsheets. And remember you probably want to save some cash for the game proper.
Mal, by the time you read this, the same thing should apply to you. But starting with $35,000. Er... $30,000 and a koala. Dang, that's more expensive than I would've expected. I shouldn't be surprised, though. I checked how much it would take to get a capybara or fox and they were both... pricey.

Out of curiosity, how does magic work in combat? Even if player characters don't learn any spells that can be used in battles I'd assume some demons would.

I'm going to get to magic tomorrow... maybe... But crash-course.
Think of it as 3 types of spells. Quick (could be used as a combat turn), Summon/Bind, and Slow (minutes to days). In addition to a few spells from CoC, you'll be able to learn a few from DeSu. I'm still working on their balance.
Spells have ranges and costs. All cost both sanity and MP. Max MP is equal to your POW and regenerates. If you run out of MP, you pass out for a while. Sanity in the base game's usually the real limiter, since it's hard and slow to regen. But considering the setting, I've made running out of sanity less big a deal and made it recover faster. By a lot. HP, too.

More on guns.
Jams. Every gun has a malfunction chance. Generally, the more powerful or fast-firing the gun, the larger the chance. But not to the degree I'd dismiss them outright...
Clearing a jam requires several combat rounds and a mechanical repair skill check.
Guns that couldn't realistically jam (flintlocks, revolvers, bolt-action rifles, boomsticks) instead just suffer a dud round and don't fire that phase.
Like melee weapons, not all guns have the same skill necessary to use. This is reflected as a bonus/penalty to the firearm skill check when firing.
Reloading - Changing a mag/clip takes one round. Changing a heavy machine gun's belt takes two. You can always place a single round in the chamber and fire it as a desperate action, but you take a penalty to hit chance.

Once Pie's character sheet is in (or he tells me to do it), we'll run a simple tutorial/test day and fight. I want to test some balancing stuff. Don't worry if items/inventory aren't done by then. Probably start it late Saturday or Sunday. It'll give people a chance to find if they want to change stuff on their character sheet and help them figure how to play. And help people on the fence decide if they want to join.

Well, that's... going to be interesting to play. I decided to limit you to spending $100,000 on starting equipment so I can pretend it's balanced.
I'll start the practice/tutorial when I wake up tomorrow.

Ah, I forgot to add magic... I can do that between posts, though.
I also meant to mention. IF you don't have a specific action you want to do, you can just pick an area (Uptown, Downtown, Outskirts, etc) and Wander around. Leave it up to luck. Who knows, you may even find someone interesting. Hint, hint.

Because I'm lazy, I made a dummy campaign on R20 and added some character sheets. I'm doing rolls and stuff there. There's not going to be any maps or anything there, but if you really want to look at stuff for some reason? app.roll20.net/join/1984433/Pq7nTA

Finally getting around to doing the magic stuff... A small correction to other combat rules. If you dodge in a round, you won't also be able to attack unless it's with a fast-firing gun. You can always parry your chosen enemy (if you have an appropriate defensive tool) without expending your dodge or attack.
Mythos
Mythos skill starts at 0%. Unless you're playing a cultist or something... The skill slowly increases as you read tomes, study demons, and things like that. However, all characters have two maximum sanity values - one determined by power, and one determined by POW. You use whichever is lower. Therefore, increasing Mythos may eventually start to decrease sanity - though the skill comes with powerful benefits.
Tomes
Mythical tomes may come into your possession. Normally, reading them takes weeks, but this will be accelerated quite a bit. Reading a book deals sanity damage, but increases Mythos skill and may potentially teach you a few spells. You can start by skimming a book - it only deals half sanity damage, is much faster, and gives you an idea of what you may get from the book. Additionally, if you choose to continue the book, you only only take the other half of the damage.
Learning Spells
There are 3 ways to learn spells. You may find spells in a tome. If you find someone who already knows spells, they can teach you (success rate per session = INTx3). If you make a deal with a powerful Eldritch being, they may grant you POWER and spells... for a price.
Magic Points
Characters' maximum magic points are equal to their POW. Typically, MP is spent to cast spells or power artifacts, but may be siphoned by powerful spells and such. Using artifacts or casting spells is a bit risky, though... Resisting magic attacks is based on your current remaining MP. If you ever run out of MP, you'll pass out for a few hours.
MP restores at a rate of 100% per 24 hours.
Casting Spells
To cast a spell, you must spend MP. Most spells also cost sanity to cast. And handful of particularly powerful spells may lower stats...
The costs, effects, range, and casting time of individual spells vary greatly. Expect to learn a few simple, cheap spells usable in a combat round, if you make an effort to do so.

Name: Cyrus Thompson Age: 25 Sex: Male Residence: Downtown
Occupation: Barkeep
Appearance: Big and tough. Maybe even a little scary. Depends on who you are. He's tall and burly as well as very muscular. His hair is short and dark brown, and if you can see his eyes, they're dark blue. Some say they stare into your very soul. But he always wears sunglasses, so that's not always a problem. When he takes them off, you can tell he means business. He's got a five o clock shadow. Often wears a simple, black T-shirt along with either dark colored pants or simply jeans. He's got a black, leather jacket that seems to be for looks and less for warmth. Especially with the short sleeves. The collar is usually popped up. He wears matching leather gloves that are fingerless, aside from the thumb. Wears either black boots or black and white sneakers.
Backstory: Cyrus originally wanted to become a psychologist, but clearly failed in that. He fell back on a secondary plan and opened up a bar on the sketchier side of town. It's small and doesn't always have a lot of service, but it's enough to get by. As the bartender and owner, he hears a lot of talk about goings on in the town. Used to speaking with people and getting information out of them. He also works as his own bouncer in a way. Not only is he good in a fist fight, but he keeps a handgun in the back of the bar for...reasons. Don't question it.
Reason to begin investigation: He heard some weird crap about strange creatures showing up recently. He originally thought the customer was crazy until more reports of the same thing began showing up. Figuring this must mean something strange, he set out to figure out what exactly it is. Probably some stupid kids pulling pranks or something...

Another not-in-the-book class... Alright, I'll say the Occupation skills are... Accounting, Art: Alcohol, Charm, Credit Rating, Fighting, Intimidate, Listen, and Psychoanalysis.
240 Occupation points for those, and 100 anything points.
Are you planning to do your own skills, or do you want me to do it?
Also... I've got an unnamed bar location people were going to be able to hit up for information, sanity healing, or meeting some NPCs. If you want to be the owner, you can give it a name.
Mm... About $60,000 median salary from my research, so $60,000 for buying starting equipment and $120,000 in the bank, plus a small live-in bar ($120,000 value).
