Kayla's the first to react. She takes aim at the beast's eye and pulls the trigger. The gun makes a soft noise like a gently ringing bell, and the creature's eye seems to erupt in a geyser of blood. The creature lets out a shriek as Swaltzer opens fire.
Swaltzer's Firearms (Rifle) check: 5/25 - Critical Hit
(...Or it would be under normal circumstances, since it was less than 1/5 the value needed to hit. But the enemy you're fighting's a bit special...)
(I won't normally do the roll stuff during combat, but this is teaching time.)
Swaltzer's gun fires the same as Kayla's. A faint impact is visible on the creature's hide, but the monster doesn't seem to react. It's much more concerned with the eye injury.
Rather than continuing to crawl slowly towards you, it suddenly leaps into the air and... flies at you! It seems to have lost its sense of depth after the injury and flies a bit past, snapping at her ineffectively.
Kayla tries to take another shot at it, but misses. Francis swings with her sword, but the light weight catches her by surprise. She barely manages to graze the monster. Cyrus swings his battleaxe and clips the monster. A bit of blood sprays out when he drags the axe back. It feels like that should have done much more damage... Cyrus is surprised by how thick and spongy the creature's hide is. Swaltzer runs back away from the thing.
The monster is sitting between Francis, Kayla, and Cyrus. Swaltzer's got some distance from it - it won't be able to reach him too soon without doing that jumpy... fly-y bite thing again. It seems royally pissed off. You clearly injured it.
Combat order is unchanged.
