I have this really great idea for a video game. I've had the story set out for about four years now but was never exactly sure where to go from there. I played hyper light drifter and hotline Miami and now I feel super inspired. I have a great idea of how I'd like the game to look and feel, but I have no idea where to go from there. Any advice on where I should get started and what programs I should use?

It depends on what the game is and how it should look.

What's the focus of the game? What's the genre? What's your goal in making it? Who are the characters? 2D pixel art or 3D models? What's combat like? What's your development team look like? Got any past experience with anything useful in this area? If you do handmade 2D graphics like Hyper Light Drifter, you're going to die, but your game will look gorgeous. What's the plan on music? What are we looking at in terms of physics? What's up with the story? What emotions are we inflicting upon the player? On a scale of one to ten, how much are you relying on blood/boobs to sell this?

Shit, that's a fuck ton of questions. Ironically I don't have the answers to every single one (Which is why I'm asking for advice). Even more ironically, I don't have time to answer them all at this exact moment.
Once again though, I have the story set out and an idea as to how I want it to look, but I'm not sure where to go from there.

Work on the game aspect. A game can have a beautiful story and visuals, but if the gameplay is garbage, nobody will play it. That's your next step. How do you want your player to interact with your world?
