In this world there exists a large island housing a massive tree, Yggdrasil. The tree and its surrounding land are a winding maze known as the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. Inside this labyrinth are wondrous treasures, strange monsters, and stranger materials. In the first years after its discovery, fame and fortune awaited any adventurer courageous - or foolish - enough to enter, provided they could return unscathed. But that was 100 years ago. The town of Kald and its port were created to support new arrivals and handle trade. The town thrived and grew. Over time, skilled adventurers and once-rare materials became commonplace. As more and more braved the labyrinth, exploring and revealing its wonders, the people became complacent. The world lost interest in the labyrinth. And then... it disappeared.
At first, a few of the townspeople began acting strangely. People began to disappear in the dead of night. Soon, people began to wander into the labyrinth in the middle of the day, as if in a trance. Then, the reports stopped. One year ago, all contact with Kald, Yggdrasil, and the entire island ceased. Anyone who went to investigate never returned. Rumors flew across the land of a disaster, a demon, a curse from the gods themselves.
The king sent an imperial airship. When they never returned, he sent another. Then a ship. Then more. None ever returned. Not a single survivor returned to resolve the mystery. The world had had enough. They longed for the bounty of the labyrinth. An small army of would-be adventurers were assembled. A fleet of ships and airships was built and launched. The crown jewel: the Y.E.S. Stormrider, a state-of-the-art ship, combining traditional ship design and airship technology to create a flagship massive beyond imagination. So began the Grand Yggdrasil Expedition.
It is the one year anniversary of Kald's disappearance. From the bow of the Stormrider, you catch your first glimpses of the tree's upper branches. As you draw closer, the sheer scale of the tree begins to become clear...

An unfamiliar voice rings out from a nearby speaker - just one of the technological innovations made for the Stormrider. "All hands to alert status. We're liable to find out what happened to the first scouts sooner rather than later. Scout teams, be ready to launch in twenty."
That's you. Either by chance or because you volunteered, you were chosen as one of the first few adventurers to make landfall. One hundred fledgling adventurers led by a half-dozen experienced Yggdrasil explorers, some of the few who were lucky enough to be away from Kald when everything started happening. The Stormrider's too large and heavy to sail directly into the harbor without risking running aground, so you'll be launching in some smaller landing craft when you get closer. Your job's to scout out the town and shoreline for good landing points. Then the rest of the ships can start unloading the rest of the expeditionary force.
The great tree continues to grow ever larger as the ship draws nearer. It dwarfs even the kingdom's capital. Miles tall, miles wide...
While most scouts head belowdeck, some linger on the deck to observe the awesome sight.
One's a tall, burly wolf Sentinel with bright, red eyes. His fur is soft white, softly rippling across his bare chest in the wind. He's decorated with red paint across his exposed back and arms. He wears a pair of golden gauntlets in contrast to his lack of shoes, and a dragon-styled white mask sits atop his head. Several fetishes dangle from a golden sash across his red pants.
The next is a birdfolk in her late teens. Unlike most of dark-skinned race, her skin is strangely pale. Like most of her kind, long, furry ears jut out from below her red hair. A red, knee-length overcoat decorated with white feathers and shiny gold buttons belies her slender frame, and the large, white wings with red tips poking out from the back also help to make her look larger than she really is. Beneath her coat, she wears a black shorts and a matching tanktop. She wears a red-and-white cap with a white poofball on the top and a smiling pumpkin emblem on the side. Claw-like hands poke out of her sleeves, and her legs transition from soft-white down to a set of viscious talons.
Then come two female Therians. One is tall and slender, with unusually floppy ears and brown hair that partially conceals a scarlet headband. The other is a young child, barely on the edge of puberty with hazlenut eyes, curled brown hair, and perky ears with white ribbons tied around the base. They're both wearing short-sleeved, knee-length dresses - yellow for the older, and sky blue for the younger. The older wears a white undershirt and matching high-heeled boots, as well as several pieces of crimson armor including large, flaring hip plates. The bunny girl contrasts her heavy armor with a bright white apron covered in frills and simple leather boots. They both wear long gloves, scarlet metal or brown leather. The younger wears a simple brown belt holding a few farming supplies, while the older has a flamboyant white sash decorated with bells to hold her sword.
The last is a Yggdroid. Sometimes it can be hard to tell, but this one is clearly styled to appear male - his exposed chest makes that abundantly clear. He's wearing ragged, black-cloth pants and sandals. Black-and-gold scale armor gauntlets and shin guards adorn his limbs. There are various tubes running across his body, most connecting to his neck and head. He's got a shockingly realistic black ponytail and even stubble on his chin.

A ruckus spreads through the scouts still gathered on the bow. Someone points up at one of the airships as it flashes a signal light. A hatch opens and a birdfolk rolls out, unfurling his wings to thud onto the bridge's roof. A runner steps out and picks up a message. Within seconds, the speakers come to life. "All hands, be advised. The Nonah is reporting signs of life in the town. I repeat, we have reports of signs of life. However, they are also reporting significant damage to the town. Continue alert status." The crowd springs to life. As a man-made tower appears on the horizon, the excited murmurs become an uproar. The Kald lighthouse, lit and flashing some sort of signal. The Yggdroid and birdfolk quickly realize what it means; the others learn as people in the crowd call out. "That's military code - there must be survivors!" "But they're flashing an order to retreat..." "As if we would! We didn't come all this way for nothing!" "Yeah! The cavalry's here to rescue them! They should be cheering!" "You moron! What if they're trying to warn us about something important?" "This ship's not like anything they've ever seen before!" "Unsinkable..." "Dude, a hexer shouldn't ever say stuff like that!" "What's that thing?" "Where?" "There, in the sky!" "There's another one... And another? Hey, they're coming this way! Someone tell the captain!" "There's dozens of them! What are they!?" "Forward batteries, airburst shells! Avoid more damage to the town! Fire!" The panicked conversation is cut off as the ship's cannons roar to life, firing a volley at a flock of strange, spherical objects rising from the horizon. Explosions of flak send shards of the strange objects crashing into the water below. But more and more keep coming, overwhelming the Stormrider even as the escort ships add to the barrage. One of the pods thuds into the deck as people scatter away from it. Contrary to people's expectations, it doesn't explode. It looks like some sort of giant seed. More continue to rain down, most splashing harmlessly into the ocean while a few lodge themselves in the deck. A particularly curious alchemist approaches one, gauntlet primed and ready to unleash a wave of fire. As it bursts open, he falls backwards with surprise. A wave of strangely huge butterflies comes flooding out, followed by a pair of large moles with sharp claws. Everyone scrambles for their weapons as the other pods start to open and release more monsters! There's no time to think - you join up with whoever's closest and prepare to defend yourself! Enemy Formation
Rear Line: Woodfly x2 Front Line: Clawed Mole x2 Party
Choose your skills (or basic attack) and targets. Skill costs are listed in the status page. About lines: Parties, enemy and ally, are split into the front and rear lines. Melee attacks from either front line deal reduced damage to opponents in the rear line, and vice-versa. A melee attack can't reach from rear line to rear line. Ranged attacks like spells and attacks using guns, bows, and spears/pitchforks do full damage.

Peri fumbles in her pockets in search of her knife, only to find something better: her gun. Terry draws her blade, and Peri and Terry team up to attack one of the moles. When Peri shoots it in the arm, Terry lops of its head. Mathilda hesitantly jabs at the other mole with her pitchfork from behind the bigger bunny. The butterflies begin shining brightly. One group reflects a stream of light into Matty's eyes without any effect. The other shines towards Wolf. He covers his eyes as they start to water. He's temporarily blinded. Without being able to see, he grabs a pouch of dirt from his belt and throws it to the ground while chanting an incantation to summon an ooze. It begins to bubble and liquefy, growing and coalescing into the form of a black slime. The slime sprays the injured Clawed Mole with plague. Ailments: When inflicted with an ailment or bind, even if an item skill isn't used, a character will recover over a few turns or as soon as the battle ends. Resistance to a particular ailment/bind will temporarily rise every time it's inflicted during a single battle.
Blind: Significantly reduce hit rate.
Plague: Lose health at the end of every turn. Plague has a chance to spread from one character to others in the same party. The mole leaps forward and stabs Terry in the side with its claws. While it's distracted, DEADLIFE runs past the mole to slash at the swarm of butterflies, killing several of them. The mole takes heavy damage from the poison. Enemy Formation

(Burst Skills are locked until you reach a certain point. Since they use a party-shared resource and the party's 5 PCs right now...)
