"What color's y-" Degrin blurts out.
Ella grabs his shoulder and pulls him back. "That's all for now. Give us a shout when you've got those electrical records." As they walk away, Ella sighs. "Why do you insist on asking that question to everyone we interrogate?"
"It throws them off guard," Degrin explains. "Besides, I only ask the witnesses that annoy me."
"You ask everyone."
"My statement stands."
The pair walk over to the crowd. "We're looking for an elf, male, mid-200's."
"Him?" Degrin asks. He points to someone matching the description.
"Maybe. Let's ask."
"Hey, you the one who called in the fire?"
The elf jumps a bit. "Ack! Y-yeah. Sorry. Just a bit jumpy."
Ella nods. "Understandable. You mind if we ask a few questions?"
"Ah... Sure."
"Let's start with the basics," Degrin says. "You live in room 206, discovered the fire around 12:15, and immediately called it in?"
(A) What were you doing when you noticed the fire?
(B) What was the state of the fire when you found it?
(C) Do you know anything about room 205?
(D) You live alone?
(E) Notice anything unusual tonight?

"What'd the fire look like when you found it?" Degrin asks.
"I don't know, I didn't see it directly. I just saw the smoke coming out from under the door and heard a bunch of... y'know. Crackling. But if I had to guess from the heat and noise, I'd say it was already big," he says. "Probably most of the living room, if not more."
"But not through the door?"
"No."
"How fast did it spread?"
"Really fast. Surprisingly fast. By the time I got my phone, called, and got back, it had already spread into the hall. And as soon as it was past that door, it just... went out of control from there..."
"Yep, fire does that..." Ella mutters.

"Well... I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. So I decided to grab a smoke. We can't smoke indoors, so I was headed outside," the neighbor explained. "I just happened to pass by and notice it."
(A) I've got it. You started the fire with a dropped cigarette, didn't you!?
(B) Do you know anything about room 205?
(C) You live alone?
(D) Notice anything unusual tonight?

"I know it was empty for a really long time," the elf says. "It got filled the other day, though. I haven't really met the new neighbor yet. He was a halfling, I think. Seemed friendly enough, though he had a propensity for dressing like a gnome for some reason."
"Weird. The owner said 205 was unoccupied...?" Ella mutters.
"Maybe he didn't know about it yet? He's not exactly the most up-to-date with the stuff going on around the apartment. Even if he got a paycheck for the guy moving in." The elf doesn't seem to have a high opinion of the owner. "The super could tell you more."
"Hm. OK, tell me about tonight. Did you notice anything unusual?" Degrin asks.
"Not tonight, no. But now that you mention it, my neighbor in 205 was acting a little bit... off earlier today. Kind of twitchy. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but... Huh."

"Uh... No. No, I don't think so. He seemed off, but... like... Out of it off. Not 'I'm doing something suspicious' off. Er... Well, actually. He always seemed a bit... suspicious. So I guess I should say he didn't seem more shifty than usual?" The neighbor scratches his head. "Does that make sense?"
"Not even a little," Ella admits.
