Name: Degrin Ervonro
Race: Tiefling
Degrin pops a cigarette out of his breast pocket. He sticks it in his mouth and snaps. A flame erupts from the his fingertip. Looking across the crowd, he decides against lighting up. Seems a bit tasteless, considering their homes just burnt down. Well, they managed to save the apartment, but the damage is pretty significant. Most of them probably lost just about everything. He quickly shakes his hand and puts the flame out.
His job is simple, in theory. Figure out what started the fire. Check how anyone died. File a report.
His partner, Ella Meke, steps up beside him. A silver-haired, fair-skinned knockout. Tall and lithe, cherry-red lips, shining silver eyes, slender neck, curvy horns, and the nicest set of wings Degrin's ever seen. Smart, competent. If only she weren't an aasimar. That's a dealbreaker. Or maybe the fact she's forbidden just makes it better. Tieflings do love tampering with the taboo... Degrin shakes his head. He really shouldn't be thinking about that sort of thing. Not on the clock, at least. He knows sticking a Tiefling and an Aasimar together on a team's just a publicity stunt for Asclepius Medical, but he doesn't particularly care.
"What do we know so far?" Degrin asks, balancing the unlit cigarette in his mouth.
Ella rattles out the basic information in a cold, matter-of-fact manner. "Fire probably started around 12:15. We think it started in an unoccupied room, number 205. Neighbor noticed it when it started to spread into the surrounding rooms. Call went out at 12:21. Jakes and ruby slippers were on-site by 12:23."
"Ruby slippers?" Degrin asks. He checks the time. 1:00. Firemen cleared them to enter pretty quick.
"That's what the jakes have taken to calling our witches. Something about their uniforms and some old human movie."
"Hm. Casualties?"
Ella holds up a finger. "Only one. Wizzer pronounced him dead before he flooded the building."
"Visual confirmation, or magic only?"
"Magic."
Degrin clicks his tongue. "Broke protocol, eh? Well, if we find that our victim drowned, that guy's in for a bad day. Where was the body found?"
"Site of the fire, 205." Ella taps her horn. Delgin's noticed she does that a lot.
"Hm. Interesting already. And now?"
"It's being kept in the lobby."
Degrin nods. "What else do we got?"
"Neighbor that found the fire's still out in the crowd. The guy who owns the building..." Ella points at a half-elf yelling at one of the firemen.
"Hmmmm."
(A) Start with the building owner
(B) Start with the neighbor that reported the fire
(C) Start with the scene
(D) Start with the corpse
