How are the gears of a particular class ranked against one another from the same class? I'm looking into this atm

That's where Ilevel comes into play if we take say the Diamond Helmet of Aiming it's got Ilevel 370 where the True Linen hat of Aiming has Item level 350 now how Square determines Ilevel you'd have to ask a smarter Eorzean then me but, I believe it's all relative in implements of 10 and 5 to what's better currently the cap is 370 but, the starting gear is item level 5

What I had in mind was something that could be considered average beginning to gear up adventurer stuff, nothing super high end, but not like, basic leveling gear

You could just slap some classic Job Armor on him from clearing the first job quest. Or you could slap Magitech on him, which is like the first set of basic end game gear you get at level 50. If you want to look at basic gear to slap on him, look for gear that you get for trading in tomes...? Tombs...? Uh...stones. Rocks. Tickets. Things. You should be able to find it without too much work. Allagan something or other I think.
