The light was dim, as it always was at that time of night. Most patients were asleep and most visitors had left, leaving the hospital halls full of nothing but staff and ghosts. Mercifully, all of his patients seemed to be comfortable and resting, leaving Silver Birch's most handsome nurse free to take interest in something else. Instead of resetting a rookie's poorly set IV line or taking commands from doctors with overly inflated sense of status, he was taking a quick stroll to the ICU. Since he was so on top of his tasks, mobody would miss him as long as he was quick.
“How's it going?” he said, sharing a smile with a fellow employee on her way out. It was a common occurrence, which made it trickier for him to do what he really wanted to. His luck was still rolling high, as it seemed that besides the single encounter, he had the halls all to himself. It was almost eerie, really. No impediments, though, meant nobody would see him checking out the scene. And what a scene it was.
Even through the tiny door-window into one of the Intentive Care Unit's most well-equipped rooms, he could tell that the patient was barely hanging onto life. Taking a moment to quickly take in just how severe the tissue damage was, Ajay reminded himself to breathe. Pulling his scrub fabric over his hand and opening the door both fast and quietly, he entered and closed it behind him. The machinery keeping the patient alive was loud – by design, so that if anything was wrong, staff would know. This was something he had to see regardless of the risk. Hell, maybe the risk actually played a part in his interest. Either way, he moved closer to the unfortunate victim...
The Story Branches...
>A patient who'd been cooked alive from the inside with electricity and survived wasn't exactly a common sight.
>A patient whose limbs had been ripped off by a bear isn't something you see every day.
>A patient with glowing purple wounds is a rarity.

I was going with the bear, but considering what situation that put us in, I'll support Just instead

I'll switch to bear ripping off limbs so we don't have a tie.

Face to Face with a Unique Patient
“Wow,” he mouthed breathlessly, running a hand through his dark hair. He'd heard the rumors when the patient was installed – not that he was a gossip, but they were everywhere. And he was a gossip too. In that moment, looking onto the full extent of the wounds that had been inflicted, he realized just what a gruesome assault it must have been. This was actually the first time he'd ever seen someone mauled by a bear in person. It wasn't a thing that happened in San Francisco, and he'd never worked in the more rural Californian hospitals.
It was the little things that painted a clear picture of how it had happened. For one, the man had four stumps instead of limbs. Four rough, uneven stumps. If the bear attack story that witnesses had reported was true, that meant that the beast had ripped and chewed off all four limbs individually. What Ajay hadn't expected was the bandaging all over the torso. Clearly he'd been ripped across by uncommonly powerful natural slicers, but there had been no evisceration. The bear had been more interested in arms and legs than anything else. Such a hateful bear. And such a resilient person. For the middle aged white dude he was staring at to even be alive was a shock. The corners of Nurse Jha's mouth turned down – he felt worse the more he looked.
“I'm sorry this happened, dude.” Talking a little to try to break up the awkwardness of the medical equipment, he leaned in and started to quietly rap with the guy. “Nobody deserves to become a quadraplegic, but damn. That thing really did a number on you. I'd say you're lucky to be alive, but...” He bit his lip, feeling bad for even implying such a thing. He'd known patients who were almost fully paralyzed that had some quality of life, but wounds like the ones he was looking at would be a nightmare to recuperate from one way or the other. “I kind of wish I'd been there, you know? Might have been able to do something, get you away.”
“FUCK NO!” The mauled patient's eyes shot open, and he stared straight at Ajay.
“Oh shit!” The twenty some odd nurse recoiled, nearly having a heart attack. “Dude, I'm sorry! I didn't know you were conscious or I would have given you privacy! I thought they must have had you on serious painkillers!”
“They do! They're not enough... And neither are you!” Breathing heavy, the man stared daggers at Ajay.
“I'm not?”
“NO! If you were there, that monster would have ripped you to bits too! He's so...” The man was caught up on the word.
“So strong?” offered the nurse, a light sheen of sweat covering his smooth brown skin.
“So smart! Tell me! Tell me who's chasing him!” It looked like with the kind of frantic mood the attacked man was in, he would have grabbed the younger male by the collar if he had arms.
“Uh... Animal Control?” He grappled for a guess, having no actual clue.
“They need to send the police to the zoo! No, SWAT! No, the National Guard!” The machines hooked up to the patient started indicating serious distress.
“For a bear? I know it hurt you badly, but-”
“It's not a bear! Listen to me! It's- It's a man!”
This was the last thing he could get out, since at that moment the machines flatlined.
The Story Branches...
>Ajay bolted out the door instantly. He didn't want to be associated with this guy's death, even if he managed to talk his way out of it.
>Ajay instantly went into action, trying to get help and resuscitate the patient. Even if the man was horribly mauled and quality of life might be low, the twentysomething considered his life precious and valuable. He would do anything he could to try and keep him alive.
>Ajay instantly went into action, trying to get help and resuscitate the patient. Whatever had happened to this guy, it sounded like it wasn't an average bear mauling. He wanted more information out of the patient.
>Ajay ensured the guy's death and bolted. It was an act of mercy, since the trauma was clearly more than just physical.

As much as I want to take the nice guy route, I'm doing it more for the information than anything. Resuscitate him for info!
Also, it would be cool to have some kind of status thread that reminds us of the choices we made so we can look over them and be like "we're assholes." Plus having it double as discussion could help keep the comics less crowded and easier to read through.
