"Hey, are you OK?" You snap out of your trance. Your friend Jenna is staring up at you from her hospital bed. Her expression is a mixture of worry and pain. "You were spacing out really bad," she accuses. "Don't tell me you were up all night worrying about me?" She starts to laugh, then immediately stops, grasping at the wound in her flank.
"Jenna!" The boy beside you jolts forward, then stops. That's Benny, another of your friends. "Try not to move, OK? You'll rip your stitches out."
"Again," the other female student on your other side sighs. "It hasn't even been a whole day. You can take off the brave face for a few minutes around us, OK?"
"Yeah. Heck, I'm surprised they let us back to see you," Benny says. "Your surgery was..."
"Pret-ty intense," Jenna nods. "I hope they filmed it so I can watch it later. Hey, how did you get in here?"
Jennifer nods at you. "Oh, they're friends with the nurse who's assigned to you. Morrison, I think? She let us sneak in for a bit. We still had to talk our way past that officer they assigned to make sure the killer doesn't come back for you."
Jenna pauses. "Officer Thompson. He's the one that carried me out of the alley..."
"Yeah. Fortunately, he got distracted by some reporter who's trying to get an interview from you. Some Valentine lady, and of course they know her," Jennifer says, giving you a glance. "You're suddenly super-popular, huh. First you catch a serial killer's eye..."
Jenna starts to laugh again, then clutches her side. "D-don't... make me laugh, please."
"I hear they're starting to call him the Twilight Slayer. You were the first to survive, y'know? It's kind of a big deal," Benny says.
Jenna's smile fades to a depressed frown. "...But I didn't see anything. He just stabbed me in the back and left me for dead... The next thing I remember, it was night, I was in an alley, and that nice lady was standing over me."
"Mrs. Miller. That brat Kevin's mom, of all people." Jennifer snorts. "Mr. Student Body President was bragging about it all day."
"Yeah, that sounds like him..." Jenna says. "Um, not to badmouth him or anything. So what else did I miss?"
"A lot of people were visiting with Mr. Kensworth today. He was doing special counseling sessions and everything. Understandably," Benny says.
"And you shoulda heard Gilliam's speech," Jennifer says. She continues on in a bad imitation of the principal. "'And all of you youngsters need to go home in pairs. First A walks B home, then B has to walk A home, too. And don't forget to wash your dog, eat your vegetables, feed the ducks.'"
Everyone chuckles at her impression, except Jenna who gives a wincing smile instead.
Even as you laugh along with the others, you're planning about what to do tomorrow. Yes, you think to yourself, because you know...
One of them is the Twilight Slayer.
