Defeat, Party Wipes, and Quest Failures
Note: There is no Perma death in the game. There are penalties to be paid for defeat, party wipes, or Quest failures but a character will never be permanently dead.
Defeat
When a characters becomes petrified or unconscious in battle, they are considered defeated in battle. A character that is unconscious can only be revived with a Phoenix down, magic, or skills. If a character is still unconscious after battle then after the battles end they will be revived in a severely weakened state. They also lose out on any JP obtained from the battle and only received a quarter of any gold reward and no items ( An example would be a quest gives the party 100g any one unconscious at the end of battle will only get 25g).
If the quest requires multiples encounters then the player still has a chance to require the full reward. As long they are still standing at the end of the battle. Any player unconscious after the final battle of any quests will be considered uncounious for the quest.
Party Wipes
A party wipe occurs if the entire party is KO or petrified during an encounter. A party wipe results in an automatic failure for any quest. The party is sent back to town but they lose half there gold and an item at random.
Additional Quest Failure conditions
The following conditions can also lead to a quest failure regardless if there was no party wipe:
An important NPC was knocked unconscious or somehow was removed from battle.
Any foe reaches a space or location that was supposed to be protected by the party.
A foe that wasn't supposed to flee, successfully flees.
Fail to escape in a certain number of turns.
Failed to hold a location or a space for number of turns.
Any failure conditions that are mentioned on the quests.
A quest failure is not considered a party wipe. The party will still returns to town but will not lose half their gold or a random item. Most quest Failures will be able to be redone. Certain quest failures could have an impact on the story.

Heart guage
Wonder how an NPC feels about you. The heart guage is used to determine the level of affection between an NPC and the players. Higher affection results in the characters being closer. At an affection rating of 6 the NPC and PC are considered dating. An affection rating of 8 the NPC and PC are considered engaged. When the affection rating reaches 10 the NPC or PC are considered married and have an unbreakable bond.
Various actions can increase affection: Spending time with said NPC, giving gifts, etc.
While certain actions can reduce your affection: Ignoring NPC, giving them gifts they hate, etc.
Players can date/ Waifu with any NPC regardless of race/species and characters can date/Waifu anyone regardless of gender. Two PCs can decide to date one another but they require both PCs being on board with it.
Affection has numerous effects on both the story and combat. Characters that are dating are more likely to defend one another, take a potential deadly blow, follow up an attack (gaining an extra attack). Characters that have reached at least an engaged status (affection rating of 8) can also learn a duo skill. When a character reaches level 10, with an NPC something special might unlock.
Not all NPCs can be married but can still reach an affection level of 10 (this would be considered an unbreakable bond). A PC can attempt to date multiple characters just be warned some PCs might react differently if your caught trying to date multiple NPCs. Do so at your own risk.
There will be a separate thread to keep track of all Heart Guage levels between NPCs and PC

Are heart gauges romantic by necessity, or are platonic relationships also an option besides just the undateable ones?

Relationship can be either platonic or romantic. After reaching level 6 with an eligible NPC you will be given a choice between turning the relationship romantic or keeping it Platonic
