"Our missing ship is on long-range scanners, reducing speed. Visual range in 20 seconds."
"Condition yellow, all hands to ready stations. Transmit identification codes."
"Sending now... No response."
"Hail them, emergency frequencies."
"No response. Automated defenses are coming online - they're targeting us!"
"Evasive maneuvers! All hands, brace!"
"Evasive maneuvers, aye! There - some of their guns are torn up, should make a blind spot. Bringing us hard to port!"
"Shields holding. Emergency transmission from Federation Headquarters - special override codes. Transmitting now..."
"Cannons are returning to standby, captain."
"Positive identification of unknown ship - confirmed as Starlion."
"Good. Now, then. Down to business. All hands, we've located the Starlion. Fed Command lost contact 3 days ago and we were the closest ship. This ship's a high priority so they're sending us in for a preliminary investigation while a proper rescue ship's en route. Our job's to figure out whether we're dealing with a comms malfunction or a pirate raid. Everything about this ship past its name is highly classified, so we're going in blind. Full scanning gear, enviro suits, full combat loadout. Check your fire and keep your nose out of any files. Load up and be ready to move in 2."

Capt. Global stares at the projected hologram of the missing ship, stroking his beard. The massive battlecruiser, Starlion, is well over four times the size of his destroyer. "Bring up the internal map."
"I can't, Captain," Lt. Clark answered. "The override codes disabled the auto-defenses but they don't give me root level access."
"Not enough clearance, huh..." Global mutters to himself. "I recognize the hull, at least. This is a modified Hecate-class. Heavily modified, but we can still probably get some idea of what we're working with. Bring up some schematics and overlay it with the display of the Starlion."
"One moment, Captain." Ensign Keyes rapidly sifts through a database.
A 2nd hologram flickers into view, sliding over the Starlion with color-coordinated diagrams of major sectors. "Better than nothing. At least we aren't going in totally blind."
"I've finished some scans of that ship. Based on the power flow, it looks like the ship has been modified to move its reactor further back. Let me update the display with a few new estimates..." Alice taps away, resizing and shifting a few rooms around. "Also, it looks like their reactor is still on, running at reduced power. But the routing doesn't make any sense. There's no power going to the life support, engines... nothing but right here."
Global taps his hat. "Considering the Starlion's role, this... is likely their research sector. Strange, yes."
"I have a report as well, Captain," William says. "I still don't have any administrative rights, but I was able to coax out a diagnostic report. Let me s- oh. That's not good. The life support's barely functioning. Anyone on the lower decks is probably already dead if they aren't in a suit. Most other sections of the ship will run out of breathable air within the next 12 hours."
"That's not a lot of time to work with. And without admin rights, we'll have to slice our way through any doors. On top of that and not knowing what's going on, there's no way we can get the reactor going in time if it's anything worse than someone forgetting to hit the start button," Global says. He thinks for a moment. "You said the lower decks are already vented. Our first objective."
OBJECTIVE 1: RESTORE POWER TO LIFE SUPPORT
"First, we're going to send three teams to infiltrate the ship... here. Forward port hanger airlock. Team 1 will require a scout or tech specialist - breach the nearby lift and ascend to the bridge to look for any survivors and try to get us into the mainframe if they can. Team 2 will escort one of our engineers... here. This junction box should allow us to route power to the 3rd lift. That lift runs from the rear hanger all the way up to the reactor. Team 2's job is to either get it operational or get it out of the way. Team 3 will head for the rear hanger and blow the explosive bolts. After we get that hanger open, it'll be our main way in and out of that ship and let us bring in the heavy equipment we need to get life support online. I'll send an updated objective list to the marines."
OBJECTIVE 1: RESTORE POWER TO LIFE SUPPORT SUBOBJECTIVE A: REACH THE BRIDGE SUBOBJECTIVE B: ESCORT THE ENGINEER TO RESTORE LIFT 3 SUBOBJECTIVE C: OPEN THE REAR HANGER
"I'll transmit the orders now," William says. "...Delivered. I'll see if I can get access to a few cameras, at least."
"And I'll update our database with the predicted map, then switch to scanning for heat signatures," Alice says. "Maybe I can find something still alive."
