I'll be honest here, I didn't play Smash 3DS since I have Smash WIIU.
Smash 3DS is extremely meh.
I highly suggest you get ORAS, Pokemon fan or not.

It really depends on if you're more of a Smash fan or a Pokémon fan. Since you're debating getting Smash 3DS, I'm assuming you don't have a Wii U to get the superior Wii U version. I personally recommend that you get Smash, since I still play both versions equally after the release of the Wii U version. The 3DS's portability allows me to challenge a lot of people at school and conventions. If you have a Wii U, I still highly recommend getting the Wii U version due to the graphics, controller options, better online, more modes, 8 Players, etc. Even if you get the Wii U version down the line, you're still gonna have fun with the 3DS version, plus it's cheaper. I know a lot more people that play Smash than play Pokémon, but maybe that's just my area. There's also more room for casual fun here, since most people I know that play Pokémon usually obsess around IV training and such. ORAS is still a great game however. I enjoyed Smash more than ORAS, but I'm more of a Smash fan anyways. If you're able to get some people near you or online to trade/battle, it's definitely worth consideration. If you've played XY, while you're in for a better experience, remember that you're losing character customization. Overall, I'd say Smash 3DS.
Once again, it really depends on if you're more of a Smash fan or a Pokémon fan. This is something entirely different, but if you don't have Animal Crossing New Leaf yet, I highly recommend it, maybe even more than Smash. It's selling for a cheaper MSRP now, and it nets you a lot of playtime if you enjoy the game.

The Smash DLC is really worth it IMO, and it won't cost you too much if you buy DLC just for 1 version. The Pokémon Bank isn't bad, but I'm not sure how I feel about paying an annual $5 for a Pokémon Cloud... It's your choice, though. You'll also be able to stretch your wallet if your area code is set to anywhere in Alaska, if you haven't already done this yet.

If you set your 3DS's zip code to anywhere in Alaska, you won't pay sales tax because Alaska doesn't collect sales tax. This is a bit wrong, but it allows you to stretch your eShop cards.

I think there's actually a lot more people that casually play Pokemon actually. Most people that have Smash only have the Wii U version at their house, but it's probably because of where I live. Generally, I only play with my friends online though. That's why I reccomend ORAS over Smash. Especially if you're ever going to get Wii U Smash. Neither will truly provide something brand new though. I'd reccomend other 3DS games before them first, but what I'd reccomend depends on what genre of games you like the most.

Really? At least in my area, all the friends I know that play Pokémon are either incredibly casual or incredibly competitive. No one really owns the Wii U version where I live, only some of the better players at my club. Everyone else has the 3DS version and even uses their 3DS as a controller for our Wii U tournaments. I still think Smash 3DS is your best choice, since a casual fighting game playstyle is much easier to achieve then a casual RPG game playstyle. And like I said, I still use my 3DS version a lot even with me owning the Wii U version, and I need the 3DS version to enter 3DS version tournaments too. Both games are still new enough to provide something new IMO. The metagame for Smash is still very young, and while I don't believe much has changed between XY and ORAS, there's still that sense of nostalgia with a remake of Gen 3; plus, ORAS is way better than XY. But, it really depends on your preferences ultra. Are there any other 3DS titles you're interested in? (This is making me want to work at GameStop... Until I remember the horrible working protocols...)

I'm assuming you meant RTSs instead of TRSs? In that case, maybe you'd be interested in Fire Emblem Awakening? It's a turn-based Strategy RPG. I'm assuming you don't already own the game. If you don't, I think it's still pretty cheap, at least less than $40.

I haven't played the MH series, but I hear high praise for it. If you're into an action RPG where you hunt large monsters with larger health bars, that may be up your alley.

It's great, but it's hard...
You would have me to help you rush multiplayer though if you want to.
It's basically a boss battle simulator... AND I LOVE IT!
