I literally just encountered a FEAR Staraptor in the Battle Tree. I don't think it even knew anything besides Quick Attack and Endeavor... The battle tree has only IV and EV trained competitive teams.

The battle tree has only IV and EV trained competitive teams. Yes, but that doesn't mean they can't be holding a Focus Sash and know Quick Attack and Endeavor. Trust me, I watched that thing take down Tapu Koko (I got greedy with Agility expecting I could oneshot with a +6 speed Electro Ball only for it to survive with a Focus Sash then land one last Quick Attack) and Guzzlord (brought to 1 hp with Endeavor, missed what could have been a killing blow, then was finished off with Quick Attack) one after the next leaving Kartana to futilely try and take down the rest of their team. As for whether it knows anything else at the very least it didn't use any other moves on me.

That means I'd expect them to use that strategy.

I didn't know it was used in competitive, I always assumed it was too gimmicky and unreliable, but I guess not. On a related note, is it just me or is the Battle Tree the toughest battle facility we've had in a while? I can usually do at least decently well with my ingame team, but here if I want to win fights even somewhat reliably I need to use legendaries. I had another fight a few days ago in which the only Pokémon I know they had was a Ferrothorn because it walled my whole team. They usually build up to these kinds of things, this time they just throw you right into it.

it is most satisfying to do that set with rattata, and via egg moves it can learn both Endeavor and quick attack at level 1, it is awesome to see something like mega rayquaza die to a rattata
and yes it is a strat that was used, i think even i used it a few times

Some people use it, but it is true that it isn't the best strategy. There are better ones.
This facility is much more difficult than past ones. It uses EV and IV trained teams annnndddd nobody tells you this in game. At least it's more realistic that you'd fight such difficult opponents. It's a good way to start learning how to train competitive Pokémon as well. If you want to use your main team, I think there's a way to reset EVs. I doubt you can change IVs though. But you can probably win without them.

But you can probably win without them. AFAIK the only way to reset EVs is with the EV lowering berries. By no means impossible, but certainly a lot more tedious than the Reset Bag in X/Y. There's also the fact that with my team all in the 60s they aren't exactly going to be gaining a whole lot of levels. I'll probably just use them as is when battling one of my friends (who isn't particularly competitive-minded either) and mostly cheese the Battle Tree. If I do decide to get serious, however, bottle caps can more or less set IVs at perfect values. It's just a shame they can't be used until level 100...

you know those stupid berries that heals you and confuses you? before there were no point in using them since they healed less then a sitrus berry. NOW they are buffed to where they heal HALF of your max HP and confuses you. that is now balanced.
now you have a choice over a berry that will heal and a berry that heals more health but confuses you. Boom BALANCED

On a related note, EV-lowering berries take obnoxiously long to grow.

Guess who just cleared the Battle Tree Single Battle Challenge? Party:
Cadence (Primarina) @ Primarium-Z Hyper Voice Sparkling Aria Shadow Ball Moonblast
Kartana @ Sitrus Berry Leaf Blade X-Scissor Detect Smart Strike
Xurkitree Hypnosis Discharge Electric Terrain Power Whip
Not the most optimized team (take a look at my items, to say nothing of the fact that neither of the Ultra Beasts are EV trained and the only move I changed on either of them was teaching Kartana Smart Strike instead of Air Slash), but I'm rather proud that I managed to clear all 20 rounds including Red while having my starter (who recently finished maxing out her Special Attack EVs) pull her weight alongside two very powerful legendaries. I'm also very happy to have purchased Absolite with my BP, now I've finally got a mega evo.
