At the end of Beach Cave, the group prepares to jump down in the deep water caves. Pip makes some bubbles and Marlus controls them with his psychic power so that he and Vereor can breathe underwater by enlarging the bubbles around them. If they get hit their bubbles will pop, so be careful. Once the bubbles pop they've only got two turns left until they run out of air. Anyway, the group moves on forward until running into a group of Shadow Clamperl. There's two of them.

Pip will get in front (but not in the way of any attackers) and use Growl on both Clamperls.

(So considering that Confusion manipulates what the opponents sees, what is the effect of Confuse Ray?) It creates illusions. So you can make them see powerful enemies, everyone as allies, etc. Confusion can only control what they see if it hurts themselves. So you make them attack themselves, throw them around, or shoot psychic beams. There are more powerful psychic abilities that are more potent, however. Like how Confusion can only throw around or confuse weaker enemies that are smaller, but Psychic can throw around large enemies and cause more potent confusion properties. That probably didn't make sense. Confusing the enemy is random and will make them either attack themselves or an ally while using Confusion. Confuse Ray lets you control the illusions so it's better for confusion, but can't do damage itself. Some Pokemon are immune to confusion status as well. Stronger psychic moves like Psychic could also cause controllable confusion, but the confusion actually affecting them is still random.

"I actually think we should retreat...
We didn't even bring anything that could make us capture one..."
Vereor will use Confuse Ray on the Clamperl which is not launched by Markus and make it not see the other Clamperl.

Come to think of it, did anyone in the capture group even say they wanted to immediately leave or to specifically come here? It would make way more sense to go to the starting forest.

Oh, you weren't going to save Werp? I thought you wanted to progress the story, but I guess I can send you to the forest. It's not like you have anything to capture the bad guys with though.

Couldn't they ask if anyone in the guild had a cage? There's a whole group dedicated to capturing outlaws, I'm sure they would have something to bring in the less cooperative ones.

I feel kind of like it would be better if I just told you there wouldn't be anything to really gain from that. The Shadow Pokemon are made purely from shadow energy that dispels when you defeat them.

Maybe so, but do the characters know that? If so, then provided that the group here wants to continue we can just say that the plan changed when they remembered that.

I think it's pretty obvious, to be honest...

Yes, but what IS Shadow Energy? As a reminder, my character was training to be a scientist. These are the exact kinds of things he would want to learn, which is also part of why he's so determined to find the stolen Shadow Gem since they know nothing about it.

It's not like you can study it. You'd have to find answers from someone that already knows about it. Finding out about this stuff is a key point in this game's plot, really.
