Funnily enough I considered the idea of him deciding to try to teach her practical magic whether she wanted him to or not.

Pretty much. To be fair, being a teacher is also a decent part of his backstory.

Kameron was a teacher at a prestigious magic school in his younger days where his primary classes were remedial spellcasting, advanced transfiguration and summoning, and a small seminar on how to teleport. The usual Magikoopa things, basically. Far from a star student, Kamek was in fact the class clown who tried to pull pranks on Kameron every chance he had, not that he remembers any of this. By the time Kamek started getting serious about learning magic he was already taking classes with other teachers instead.
Kameron has no affiliation whatsoever with Bowser, nor has he ever had one. That being said thanks to Bowser's preference for using brute force rather than what little magic he does know combined with not one but two window incidents, Kameron isn't exactly fond of him.
On a side note, Kameron is much more skilled at magic than the gameplay implies. As seen in the Vitcon Hotel he's capable of rapid firing a deadly salvo of Spell Shots while teleport spamming all over the place when not limited by a turn based structure and game balance in general, and there are very few forms of magic if any that he doesn't at least know a little bit about. The fact that he doesn't go out very often these days is probably for the best as he has the potential to cause some serious mayhem if he wanted to.
Finally, there's one thing about him I won't talk about yet, but it might help him seem a bit less like an unlikeable ass.

Gugu was an orphan who was adopted by Captain Guy. He became a tresure hunter instead of being an actual member of the pirate crew, but he still considered them his family.

You guys drowned every single one of them...

Gugu didn't actually hate anyone from the SMRPG2 party, but he still held a grudge and blocked their path whenever he could. He also fought them for a treasure multiple times.

He still joined the party multiple times and never actually did something inherently evil. He probably participated in the final battle, on the heroes' side.

Notable events:
-Gugu managed to reach top 5 in Glitzville, making him one of the final 5 battles of that section
-Gugu teamed up with Wario once to get a plot related treasure before the heroes
-Gugu was the second-to-last boss of Rogueport (The game had 5 entire sections with their own stories)
