Guild Leaders
...Someone is knocking on the door.
And by that I mean, there's literally someone standing at the gates and knocking on them like a door to a house.

B-Ball Mage: "I GOT IT!" BB walks up to the gates, greeting the person through them. "Yo. What's up?"

Elegra stops knocking. "Oh! Um. Yes, hello. Er... Yo. I'm Elegra Legault. I heard rumors about a... resistance movement, I suppose it should be called? And I was hoping to join."

BB: "Schling-a-ding-ding! That's the correct answer, lady! Come on in!" B-Ball Mage starts getting the gates opened. Mars patiently observes from afar.

How many people can be in a party? I was thinking that we could have a mix of older and newer characters for this mission with the explanation being that it's a field test of the new characters with the old ones watching and ready to intervene if necessary, and if there's multiple areas where the barrier is weakening they could split up into four groups with one returning character each overseeing them.

Since everyone gets one Note Beast out at a time, I'd say you can have three conductors in a party. That means a max of six if all are normal Conductors and a minimum of three if all are Beastmen. But you'd probably want a good balance of Beastmen and Conductors so you can have numbers and power.
So to answer simply, three people per party so I can avoid being overwhelmed like last time.

Alright, and there's five new player characters... how many new NPCs are there?

You've got Gerand from the old game, Erika the one with the chain blades, Edgar the beastman, Erius with the stone horse, and you can always hire new NPCs by searching for them. Just let Gerand know you want some new members. Think of Gerand as your intel gatherer and member manager. He'll help post the missions you want to commission as well.

So three new NPCs, meaning we've got a grand total of eight new characters and four old ones? Perfect, that divides up evenly into teams of one leader and two rookies. Does anyone have any preferences as far as teams go?

(OOC, Rachel and Varon should be in different teams so I don't have to GM myself when I'm not even GM.)
Rachel leans on a wall and seems to listen.
"We're sending new recruits with us to deal with that barriers?
Really?
Well...
I guess you two were the ones to train them, if you think they can handle it...
With that said, I'd need to know what they can do in order to help you guys form teams."

Elegra waits for the gate to open and walks in. She can't help but smile. "And a... swing-a-ling-ding to you, as well, friend! I'm not particularly experienced with fighting, but I hope I can be of some use." She enthusiastically slams a fist into her palm. "Now then! What... um... Where do you need me?"

Varon will slowly walk towards the altar and meditate next to it as to pay respect to Laslou.
Varon: "I remember when I first summoned you my old friend... It was an altar just like this one."

(You should probably get the new lady a Note. There might be leftovers from the new recruits yesterday.)
Gerand looks over at Varon. "Looking at the altar? While you might not be able to use it to summon new Note Beasts, it might still have a use for you. If you ever find any Gems, come see me and I'll tell you about it."

B-Ball Mage ponders for a minute, pacing about. "Well, uh... I think I'm supposed to make sure you're trustworthy and all that, but I sniff some fiery gusto in ya! That's the kind of stuff I haven't seen in the league for ages, so you've got my draft pick! Lemme see what stuff we got for a green first..." B-Ball Mage leaves to check and grab whatever leftover Notes we've got.
Mars: "That's true; with the way threats are evolving these days, it may be wise for us to introduce our recruits to some exposure of a real mission. And I have to admit, I'd love to see how the new generation of Conductors is evolving firsthand."

Looks like all you have leftover are Basic Notes, Blaze Notes, and an Ice Note.
