Name: Serena Bayes
Race: Human
Witches have long been reviled by some and beloved by others - really, it depends on which witch you knew. Their reputations as practitioners of black magic did them no favors, but they're also known as healers and potion-makers. Traditionally female, plenty of males have been picking up the mantle in recent years, as well.
It turns out witches make pretty good first responders: search-and-rescue, basic life support, even fighting fires. Their brooms let them fly places trucks could never reach, and get there faster, too. They know a few useful spells, as well. In the first few years after the cataclysm, it wasn't uncommon to see a witch volunteer working at a fire station or hospital in larger cities. Some less-developed areas without roads - where large trucks couldn't always go - would have their own teams of witches.
Serena is a young woman born shortly after the cataclysm. She's one of the first children of 'modern-world' humans to study magic in school, and part of the first generation of government-sanctioned first-response witches. She was selected as a member of Asclepius Medical's witch team due to her familiarity with the area, combined with her high marks in physical examinations.
Serena packs her personal things away, changes into her uniform - a red dress with white apron based on traditional designs - makes sure her gear bag is filled and secured to her broom, and walks into the ready room. There's a half-dozen other witches waiting already. That makes her the last to arrive. Three humans (one male), an elf, a half-elf, and... Serena's a bit embarrassed, but she isn't entirely sure whether the last is a halfling or a gnome. It'd normally be obvious from her outfit, but with everyone in the same uniform...
The supervisor - a centaur, very clearly not a witch - walks in after the others are all ready. Serena and all the rest watch the clock carefully. They let out a collective sigh as it rolls over to midnight - witching hour. Serena's not sure what she expected, but nothing particularly odd happens. No sudden flood of calls or anything. The centaur speaks up. "Alright ladies..." she chokes and glances at the man among the group. He smiles and shrugs. "Alright, ladies! We're officially open for business. If you've got time to sit around and stare at the clock, you've got time to do something useful!"
A chirp rings out from a box at the front of the room. Asclepius Medical's first-ever patient! Serena reminds herself someone's probably dying, this isn't the time to be excited. "Fire in progress on 4th Street near Blackwater Road. Firefighting teams and ambulances are already en route. They're requesting a team of witches for support."
The centaur looks around the room. "Alright, you heard them! Time to show them what we can do. ...You! You're up!"
Me!? Serena thinks to herself. She chokes back any surprise and jumps up. "Understood! Ready to go!"
She's halfway out the door when the centaur loudly clears her throat. "A team of witches. Pick your partner and get going."
"Right!" Serena looks around the room. They all look excited and ready to go. She knows a bit about them from orientation. The gnome - she's pretty sure she's a gnome - is an expert at mobility related skills, pretty quick, but a bit scrawny, unfortunately. The guy's pretty well-rounded, as best she can tell - he'd be handy in a fight, at least. The red-haired human girl's pretty handy with fire and earth magic, could be useful in a fire. The half-elf's beautiful, extremely charismatic, and knows a bit more about charm magic than she probably should. The elf's kind of stuck up, but one of the best summoners around. And the other woman - a petite blonde - specializes in wind- and water-based spells.
Serena herself prefers healing magic, and physical enhancement spells.
