Nonah, Bridge
"Final approach. Mendel in visual range in 5, 4, 3, 2..."
"Full stop. Send out a hail on encoded channels."
"...No response, Captain."
"Broadcast on open channels."
"No response, Captain."
"Harrumph. Any signs of life at all?"
"Life Support seems to be active in most sectors. Power use is elevated in these areas here. There could definitely be some survivors, but no guarantees. Signs of damage in this area here, I recommend the advance team avoid it."
"An attack? Or an accident? Any signs of battle?"
"Explosion seems to have come from within. There's no way to rule out sabotage, Captain, but there's no sign of any ship debris and the station's turrets are active and pinging in response to our IFF."
"I see. Without a map of the facility... Can we identify anything?"
"The damaged area appears to be the main reactor. I'd assume this is the communications array here... beyond that, I'll need more time for analysis, Captain."
"Landing options?"
"The main dock is obvious choice, and command sent us access codes. I spot a half-dozen airlocks along the surface. There may be more. However, without knowing the rest of the station's security codes..."
"Right. The base security teams might not take kindly to us cutting our way in. Best to give them as much warning as possible to avoid any friendly fire... We'll land in the hanger. Broadcast the access codes."
"Aye, Captain."
Nonah, Main Airlock
"Captain Global to all hands. We'll be landing in 3 minutes. From the look of things, something exploded near the main reactor. In case this was just an accident, we'll only send in a small strike team for now. Here is your objective: enter the station and get an overview of the situation by whatever means is most convenient. If the situation is unstable, you're authorized to extract survivors to the Nonah."
Mendel, Main Dock
Through the ship airlock...
The dock itself is a large, empty room with clamps to hold even a ship as large as a cruiser like the Nonah, as well as flexible ramps to attach to any size ship's airlock. At the end of the long, narrow, stark-white tunnel...
Mendel, Main Entrance
A reception area. Two rows of a half-dozen chairs each line the closest walls. Directly ahead, a thin desk with two empty chairs and an alliance emblem on the wall - no other obvious marks, not even the station logo. A pair of vending machines against the left wall, as well as a SEALED DOOR. To the right, a CLOSED BUT UNLOCKED mechanical door. Another door set behind the small desk is PARTIALLY OPEN.
The air is still. The air vent in the far-right corner of the ceiling is SEALED. One of the dozen fluorescent lights above is BROKEN. Soft, calm music is playing quietly over a speaker in the ceiling.
No signs of life. No sound besides the jingly melody, then a click from one of the members of the squad members as he double-checks his machine gun's magazine. "It's quiet," he says.
Another finishes his thought. "Too quiet."
"You idiots. Saying something like that's just asking for trouble." A nervous trooper adjusts the straps on her machine gun and turns to face the closed but unlocked door.
"This station, though... 's huge. Bigger than the town I grew up in. How'd they hide something like this?"
"Cut the chatter. Fan out and find something useful."
