The Soul Link is used and Gunther learns Gear Shot. You can visibly see gears appear inside of Gunther once he learns the ability.

I will teach Sepiroth how to drop a meteor on the planet Hammer Smash
After I teach it a skill can I still change its environment??

"Well, you are not restricted to what you can do. You may take up assignments whenever you would like. In fact, I have a few you can take right now. Just simply pick them up from the classroom. Other than that, you can always raise your Vitmons, have them interact with other Vitmons, train out in the areas, enter the tournaments, contests, and races, and even go shopping at the store. Training and gathering up more Soul Links is never a bad idea either."

Carla teaches her Vitmon Hammer Smash. Using up the Soul Link, it changes form a little. Small, little Kirby-like hands appear on Sephiroth and he holds a giant hammer made of ice. It's impressive he can hold it like that. Carla and Sephiroth then head over to Professor Lilliana to receive their next assignment. It looks like they have two options.

"Some assignments will yield Soul Links as rewards. They are usually the best way to get them since you will receive Breeder Points as well and increase your Breeder Rank. But if you do not find an assignment you wish to take on at the moment, you can always go out and create your own Soul Links by helping your friends and fellow students on their assignments."

"Well Mr. Sagitar, I looked at the list and it seems you have an assignment I'm interested in. I'd like to learn how to feed Gunther, then take the other assignment where I have him communicate with a wild beast please."

Carla will go ahead and do the Goblin assignemt she can't wait to send some Goblins flying with her hammer.

Gale takes up the Vitmon feeding assignment! "Alright, first things first." Professor Sagitar adds 500 Credits to your card. "You should go buy some food from the shop here. Anything you think that Gunther might enjoy. They sell a wide variety of different foods with different effects."
Carla takes on the Goblin assignment and heads over to the Airship Landing.

"Ah. I nearly forgot. That fruit you have there. The Demon Fruit. It has a different function other than raising stats. It will help to change your Vitmon's classification. A classification is sort of luck a type of Vitmon. So Slime, Plant, Demon, Aquatic, Dragon, and so on."
