Nora shifts her weight and settles more comfortably in Alice's lap, then reaches for her purse and retrieves an ornate, decorated card box. She opens the box and takes out her tarot deck, and shuffles the cards.
She smiles at Natsumi as she shuffles. "We'll do you first, dear. Since this is your first time having a reading done by little ole me, why don't we keep this simple, hmm? I'll draw 3 cards one by one and spread them out before you, in a standard 3 draw reading. No trying to guess or read anything about you like a charlatan, just me drawing the cards and telling you what they say. These cards represent your past, present, and future. Now, I'll be the first to admit I tend to cheat at card games- Why, I did so once tonight- but these cards are special, dear. They have a way of... being frighteningly accurate, one might say. I have no control over them, even if I wanted to. They speak for themselves. This isn't your typical tarot card deck that any curious girl could buy at the local mall. These here cards belonged to Helena Blavatsky herself. So let's see what they have in store for you, hm?"
She finishes shuffling, places the deck on the nearby table, and draws three cards, one at a time, placing them face down. She reveals the first card on the left.
"Now, this card represents your past... Upright Moon, hmm? Interesting.... This says your past is full of secrets and uncertainty, confusion and illusions. It represents your unconscious mind desperately trying to tell you something, to get through to you. Some event that happened in your past, that changed you forever and made you who you are, remains unclear to you. Your conscious mind only knows the lies and illusions that stick close to the surface, but your unconscious mind knows the truth that lies in the depths beneath. You already know the truth of your past, but you are too afraid to confront it. But confront it you must, if you are ever to have closure."
She reveals the middle card. "This card symbolizes your present... Upright Strength. Hmm... To be paired with Moon in your past... You are a fascinating person, Natsumi. This card means you are resilient, perhaps even more so than you yourself are aware, as you are now. Fearlessness, compassion, bravery... All the qualities one could want. But when paired with the Moon... you seem to find strength in others more than yourself, hm? You believe yourself weaker than you truly are, and thus seek to draw strength from elsewhere. You have no need to do so, dear. Finding strength in one's friends or beliefs or family or any outside source is not a bad thing, but it ill prepares you for facing your own demons. There are times when we must all face trials on our own, stand on our own two feet and force our way through to the future, and you have the courage and resilience to do so. Even if you don't know it."
Nora reveals the last card, the one on the right. "Now, let's see what your future holds...Oh dear. The World, reversed. The unending journey, the path to emptiness, the lack of closure... My dear, you are missing something vital. If you continue on your current path without finding it, all you will find at your journey's end is a barren field. A field of grass, devoid of even the wind. There will be no closure for you, no fulfillment, no satisfaction, unless you find the part of you that is missing. This can be anything- I'm afraid I cannot tell you what it is. Attempting to guess would just be lying to you. It could be something physical or concrete, like a missing family member or friend or a missing object, or it could be something abstract like what you truly want to do with your life or what truly matters to you. But the cards do not lie, and the Reversed World is an urgent card. It is vital that you find what you're missing, and soon, if you wish to change your future. But do not fret. You have the strength to do so."
She flips the cards back down and shuffles them into her deck. "Now, if I were a common fortune teller, this is where I would promise you I would help you find what you're missing for a modest fee. But I am anything but common, and more than a little rich, so you don't have to worry about that. You should never trust a fortune teller that charges you."
She turns to Alice and her smile widens to a grin. "Do you still want your reading, my sweet?"
