Dewey"You... asked me to come...?" Somnis answers. "I live here, live here," Hinoh says. "We're still in the entrance. But if you were asking that other girl, she went back out through the port- ah?" Somnis stops talking mid-sentence. "Oh... Hey," another person you don't recognize says. And you don't think it's just because of the radio's quality, you haven't heard this voice before. "I wanted to stop by to talk to Hinoh, but I'll just... come back... another time." ”Yes, I was talking to the other girl. Who’s the new person?”

"That's a good question," Somnis answers into the radio. She continues talking to the others. "Hey, what's your name?"
"Oh, I'm... y'know... stuff..." the voice says.
"Stuff? Stuff??" Hinoh demands. "You, you. I know you!"
"Right, right. You can call me Gamma. I came to apologize for the other day... So, uh. Yeah. Sorry. I hope we didn't smash things up too bad."
"Bad, bad! Very bad!" Hinoh trumpets.
"You're hearing all this, right?" Somnis asks softly.

Dewey replies back equally quietly as he goes to get the same book as last time. “Yes, I can hear all of this. Can you describe this ‘Gamma’ person?”

"Uh..." Somnis stammers. "No. Actually I'm not even sure he... she? is a person. It looks like a black robot."
"Robot!? No, this is a combat suit, I- um, anyway. I said my apology, Hinoh. I should go. It'd be kinda ironic to accidentally start another fight."
"Hey, w- they left." Somnis stops talking. "Oh, uh, over."
"Over, over," Hinoh repeats.

“Strange... Let me know if anyone else steps through the portal, in the meantime I’m going to see what I can learn from some of these books. Hinoh, is there any way we could come to some sort of arrangement here? There are far too many books here to read in one night, and I would love to have permission to come back here in the near future and keep reading my way through them. In exchange if you have any chores or other things you’d want me to do I would be happy to work for library privileges.”

"Just clean up after yourself. Clean, clean," Hinoh says. "And no bringing in anyone to fight. No fight."
"...Over," Somnis finishes.

“Over.” After getting the previous book out again Dewey opens it up and begins reading.

How much is he reading? Is he skimming parts that seem unimportant/interesting, flipping randomly, or going hard?

How large of a book did Dewey go for?

The one about the forest of winds? Well if it’s up to me I’d say he picked one that’s fairly large, but not massive. In that case he’ll pretty much go cover to cover if he has the time for it, trying not to skip anything but doing so if there’s anything that he outright couldn’t hope to understand with his current knowledge of the Other World. (I’m assuming I don’t get a full book worth of lore anyways.)

Dewey
You begin reading about the Forest of Winds.
The first section is about the geography of the area and how it's changed over time. You're able to learn this area is, unsurprisingly, a forest. It has a few meadows and ponds and a large cliff on one edge. The trees provide a natural barrier that's hard to pass from the outside, especially if you can't fly.
The next section is information about the guardians and their families. You notice two trends. First, almost all of the guardians are birds, but there's occasionally a giant squirrel monster or a butterfly. The most recent one mentioned in this book - who knows how out of date it is - was a bat.
There's also a long history of arguments and even fights between different sections of the Otherworld. You learn something interesting. When one guardian kills another, a creature known as a beast appears to defend the realm in the guardian's stead. The guardian of the Forest of Winds is a large butterfly known as Monarch.

Oh wow I completely forgot the conclusion there...
Dewey
After what you later realize was several hours of reading in a comfortable chair you found tucked into the corner, you're snapped out of reading most of the way through the book when your radio goes off.
"Dewey! Dewey we need to go! It's almost sunrise and the portals are about to close!" Somnis yells. "I dozed off and it's time to go! Quick, quick, like little bunny!"

Regretting that he can’t just stay here until the portal opens again that night, Dewey returns the book to the same spot on the shelf it came from and quickly goes back to the entrance so he can leave with Somnis.

When you head to the entrance, you find Somnis giving Hinoh a hug. "Bye, Hinoh! Now that I know where the entrance is, I'll stop by and visit some other time!"
As you step through the portal, you can tell the sun will be rising very shortly.
Somnis stretches and yawns. "Alright, well, today's gonna suck, huh?"
You're exhausted. You might have time for a quick nap, but you can already tell she's right.
