Dewey
"Kinda. Yes. Not really. Sorta. They just said it was special and asked nicely," Katie says. She pauses to think. "And gave me a sandwich. I think it was a bribe."
"Why'd you come here with someone else...?" Fox asks.
"I didn't know there was another portal! We were just standing there stalking them and then it opened and we kinda fell in. Oops."

Dewey’s ability to not emote is tested, but in the end his blank expression wins out over the mix of exasperation and confusion. “In any case, were wasting what little time we have standing here and debating the details of how you discovered this portal when we can talk about that another time. If we used this other portal to directly enter do you think it would help us avoid getting into a fight, or merely place us in the middle of a den of beasts?”

Dewey
"Ummmmm well like I said it was about halfway up so-o-o-o it's past those mean, adorable, huggable, lovable birds. And it had a doorway into the tree, which had a big staircase going up and down from there. Oh, but up had a giant beehive. Me 'n' Fffffffriend tried to go through it but the bees didn't like that and there were a lot of them."

Dewey mentally notes that it sounds like she may have been about to say a name that starts with “F”, then looks at Tia. “As best as you can remember, would these bees have anything to do with the guardian?”

Tia thinks. And thinks. And thinks. "I don't think so? They probably just live here. Like how I don't really have anything to do with the mannequins in the Soul Labyrinth other than being their boss that they don't really listen to."

“...In that case, we may as well begin at the base of the tree. That will let us scout the lower half out tonight and see if we find anything of note, and when we reach this special portal we can use it to leave. Then, maybe we’ll tackle the upper half another day.” With that Dewey activates his Soul Key and begins approaching the tree, keeping an eye out for the birds.

Dewey
As Dewey starts advancing, the others join him.
Fox holds up his key and is immediately covered in a beach towel worn like a large cloak, completely concealing his identity. With his scythe he looks like the grim reaper from some comedy sketch.
Katie twirls her key on a finger for a minute. "Eenie, meenie, miney... this one!" She hops up into the air and is momentarily cocooned in a ball of feathers that explode into a shower. She reappears in the form of a large eagle, hovering in place. She lets out a piercing screech and flies ahead of the others and into the tree. The other birds look down at her as she approaches, but continue to keep their distance.
Tia lags a bit behind, still hesitating to use her key. It's not until you reach the entrance to the tree that she finally sighs and holds out her key. It elongates into a spear and her outfit glows bright. A moment later she's wearing a bikini top and skirted bottom that look like they were cut from a toga, and sandals with laces that coil almost to her knees. And then she flashes again, and she's back to her normal outfit, her spear back to being a key. She frowns, tongue flicking in and out as she stares at her key.
Before you can react, Katie calls from inside. "Ummmm, guys? We're kinda under attack."
You get a brief glimpse inside and find the tree is hollow. Two wide staircases start a few steps away heading in different directions. One leads down under the ground, while the other spirals up half a turn to what looks like some kind of wooden platform up above, though by rough estimate it's a half-mile walk at least... Not something to look forward to, but there are more immediate things to not look forward to. The floor inside is open, dirt with gnarled roots the size of cars poking out in places. It takes a minute for you to realize what exactly Katie is talking about, then you notice a pair of creatures you didn't even register at first. Two man-sized mushrooms poking out of the ground are slowly rotating to face you with eerie, hollowed-out sockets that look vaguely like eyes. They shake, spreading a sphere of spores around themselves.

Dewey activates his Soul Key, noticing that there are quite a few more spells in his tome than he remembers. Rather than immediately trying one, however, he uses Analyze instead. (Were they any other sort of plant I’d just go with Mystic Miasma, but since they’re mushrooms I’m not completely sure whether they’re plant or poison.)

Dewey
Dewey calmly points his book at the mushroom-things and begins to read the article that appears.
Mush Element: Plant Weapon: Spore Skills: Poison Powder, Stun Powder, Feed, Burst Weakness: Fire, Metal, Celestial Resistance: Plant, Water, Earth Drops: ? Description: A particularly huge mushroom that blows spores to incapacitate its opponent, then feed on them
Interesting.
While he's doing that, Fox flings his scythe. It twirls through the air, spinning and slicing one of the creatures before doubling back and slashing the other from behind. He hops up to catch it, twirling it as he resets into a guarded stance. Katie takes a much less cautious approach, divebombing the closer of the two and slashing at it repeatedly with her talons.
The mushroom Katie attacked faces her, spewing out a small cloud of orange spores. They seem to cling to her feathers, and she falls out of the sky with a thud. The other mushroom expels a much larger, purple cloud. Dewey takes a breath and immediately starts to feel sick. Fox wraps his cloak-towel around his face, and seems fine. Behind you, you notice Tia covering her mouth with one hand and still fumbling with her key in the other. She continues to flicker between her two forms.

Well Katie’s clearly stunned, which means this must be... poison. Better end this fast and hope my soul key can cleanse it. Dewey manages to mumble out the incantation for Mystic Flame without vomiting, aiming it at the one near Katie. In this state he’s not even going to try telling the others what it’s weak to, he just hopes they’ll be able to figure out from what he’s doing.

Dewey
You proceed to spew flames at one of the mushrooms. It shudders, swells, and deforms in the heat, then bashes its cap against Katie while she's on the ground. While you attack that one, the other sinks into the ground. It suddenly reappears beside you and bashes you, too. Compared to some of the attacks you've seen, it's not much of anything. The poison seems much more damaging.
Meanwhile, Fox stands there. At first it looks like he's doing nothing, but you notice him focusing intently as he prepares to strike.
Katie shakes off some of the spores and manages to get back to her feet, though not back to the air.
Tia lets out a shout, and you notice she seems to have gotten her transformation under control. She runs forward to join you, spear in hand.

Noting that the one in front of him doesn’t seem to be much of a direct threat, Dewey continues immolating the one by Katie while stepping aside to give Tia and Fox a clear shot at the one attacking him.

You aim at the mushroom attacking Katie and launch another fireball. It bursts as it impacts the creature, engulfing the mushroom in flames. The creature begins to writhe and bulge, then explodes in a shower of red spores.
Katie finally forces herself up, then dives at you. Her talons dig into your shoulders, and she shoots into the sky even as you go into a coughing fit from the poison. She's completely nonreactive to anything you say, as if in a trance.
Fox leaps at the remaining mushroom, swinging his scythe and taking out a chunk of the creature. It flails around and whacks him. In that moment, Tia lunges forward with her spear. She stabs through the creature hard enough for the speartip to poke through the other side.
Katie whips around from high up in the chamber and flings you towards the ground. Fox rocks back, then flicks his scythe, sending a burst of wind through the monster. It explodes just as the other did, this one releasing grey scales. Tia swings at the air a few times, seemingly annoyed but not stopped by whatever they are. She starts running towards you as you fall, then stabs her spear into the ground and vaults into the air. She slams into you from the side, grabbing on as she tackles you to the side. The two of you go rolling before finally coming to a stop near the center of the chamber.
You're once again reminded how strong these soul keys are... a fall that height should have meant a broken bone, at least, even with Tia's intervention. Instead you feel like you'll have a few bruises. You can already feel your injuries knitting back together, and the nausea starting to fade.
Katie shakes the red scales off, and starts lowering herself to the ground. "Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry, I don't know... why I did that...? Are you OK?"
Tia flicks her tongue out, accidentally whapping you in the nose. "Are you?"

“I’m...” Dewey pauses for a moment as the nausea starts to clear and reflexively flinches a bit in response to the tongue whap. “I’m alright. Thank you for catching me.”

Dewey
Tia picks herself up, then helps you. She puts her hands on her hips and beams. "We learned how to do that in Wrestling Club!"
Fox and Katie are talking off in the distance. It seems that Fox is trying to calm Katie down after she went berserk. He helps dab her eyes, seeing as she's currently covered in feathers without arms.
She flies over and lands on the ground. "I'm sorry..."
"I forgive you!" Tia says, oblivious. "So which way? Up or down?"
