"So my friends and I were chasing this cult but then the cult people-" you start explaining. The guards sit in stunned silence as you finish your story. Then the leader sends two of them to check the sewers while the others escort you allllll the way to the real fancy citylord's mansion in the big rich-person section of town! They even carry the witch for you. Really nice of them.
A few days later and you're sitting in a jail cell. Bored. So bored. Well, it probably hasn't been days, it's still night. And you're not even really tired yet! So probably just a few hours. But you're so, so BORED it feels like hours and you can only sit on the bed swinging your legs for so long before you get bored. You walk through the cell bars and ask the guard how much longer you have to wait. He tells you it should only be a few more minutes. He ALWAYS says it should only be a few more minutes. So you go do some pull-ups on the edge of the bed. It's better than nothing.
Eventually a really grumpy-looking old lady wanders in. The guards salute her, so she's proooobably important? Finally! They throw the cell open and she walks in, setting down a stool and taking a seat.
"Hi!" you greet her. "Are you the really important lady I have to sit and be patient and wait for?"
"I wouldn't have used those words, but yes." She takes out a quill, ink, and small book. "Now, would you mind telling me exactly what happened?"
"I don't wanna," you protest.
"Oh?"
"I already told the story a THOUSAND times tonight!"
"I see... Well, I promise this is the last time." The lady reaches into her pouch and your eyes go wide as she pulls out a large piece of chocolate, snapping off a piece the size of your head. "As long as you promise to tell me everything that happened in a lot of detail. Promise?"
"Oh... OK!" You proceed to launch into the story one more time. She keeps asking you for a lot of really annoying little details and you didn't really notice a lot of that stuff so you tell her you don't know and she usually scowls but sometimes she gives you a chunk of the chocolate to distract you while she scribbles some notes. She asks for a loooot of detail about the sewer and you have to try to draw a map for her which is hard because the quill is half your size and tickles when you try to grab it and then she makes you draw the sigil but she says it's nonsense so you try again and she looks annoyed so you try again and she realizes what you're trying to draw and smiles a lot. Then you get to the part about carrying the witch out of the sewers and she cuts you off and says you did a good job. And then she sends you on your way.
Out in the mansion foyer you find your friends! The rogue and the barbarian and the bard, who's holding a big sack and smiling REALLY big. It jingles a little bit when she turns to face you and she takes out a golden coin to show you. Money! But you're tired. And apparently they said to stay out of the sewers for now until they put together a group to raid the witch-hideout. You decide to head back to the inn for the night while the guards deal with finishing the investigation. You'll have to find another lead to investigate tomorrow...
