You and Fenian head out of the town to the east, towards the Ervue border. The guards stop you at first, until they realize you're students. "Students visiting the forest? That's fine, just don't go more than a few miles in or you'll be in Ervue territory."
You head off the main road proceed into the forest proper. Fenian doesn't bother with finding a path, seeming to just meld with a bush and slip through. He stops to admire the tree. For a minute. Without saying anything. Silent. Staring.
Rishan gives him his moment with the tree and takes in the surroundings keeping a close eye out for spell components. fey. or other notable phenomena
Rishan ignores... whatever this is and starts looking for spell components. Spell components... what do those even really look like? You know the old folk tales. Mushrooms and animal bits, but what types of those? And what are the signs of a fey? Other than huge, hectic changes, but there has to be a way to know a fey is around other than when they get pissy... Rishan comes away from his meditation acutely aware of just how much there is for him to learn. Fenian waves his hand in front of your face. "Um... Are you well? You are staring."
"Hmmmm....ohhh yes just contemplating things big things ahead of us lot's to consider. Did you finish remembering that tree?"
"Oh... Yes. I asked it many things. It chose to answer little. That is common. We should be turning back soon. Did you have a time?"
"Yes it was good to get some fresh air.... as much academic value as the college has the one thing I'm not looking forward to is so much time spent surrounded by cave walls. I am curious about your conversation with the tree though as long as neither of you mind sharing I'd love to hear about it on our way back."

"Hmmm, if you're not interested in business I doubt it's going to interest you much. Just some re-negations of trading deals and tariffs and whatnot with Ervue. Should be real favorable to both sides in the long run. Gonna be way easier to get goods in and out of Valorwind here. You can expect to see way more traffic starting in a few weeks." He takes another bite of his... thing. "It's already pretty easy to cross the border hereabouts. But crazier rumors say there's a long-term plan to make this city an experimental joint Lanilla-Ervue thing. Even took some Ervue students in up at the college! Crazy, right? If it's true."
You poke around a bit more, but other than seeing a few other weird, experimental dishes you don't find much interesting here. Definitely on the 'glorified restaurant' end of taverns...

"Yeah, but all I have to do to stop looking like a dork is lose the hat and kick off the boots. The cloak's not bad." She looks down as if she's considering it, then shakes her head. She clearly prefers warm and dorky over hot and cold. She looks around, then glares at the sky. "I don't think we really have time to sightsee, but we can afford to take the long way back."
You get a slightly better idea of the north end of town. Like you thought, it seems to be mostly made of houses and apartments with a few smaller stores. Clothing, general goods, groceries, things locals would want. You make your way back but can't find any proper ways back to the road towards the college, not without going all the way back to the plaza.
Erin rolls her eyes. "Come on. We're gonna be late." She kneels down by a one-story building that should be right between and cups her hands. She practically tosses you over and waits for you to pull her back up. You drop down into the alley just in time to see Ray and Iora heading inside.

Cantrelle
You sing a few songs and get a few coins. Some from the owner, some tossed at you by the crowd. So that's probably why they weren't going to pay you so much. You don't make terribly much, but it's enough for a few meals.
You have time to at least try the stew before you go. Nice and thick... and warm. Plenty of vegetables. Hearty.

Iora yawns. "My story's dull. Felt like learning magic. So I'm here learning magic. The goddess is more interesting... she was started as a statue of a different goddess, back when Ervue owned this town... then Lanilla took it, shaved off a few bits, and added some more stuff..." Iora yawns again, louder. "Wonder if the other goddess is jealous or if they learned to share..."

"War. Mostly. Much of fighting. The tree was old. Has drank much blood. Blood-drunk. Thirsty," Fenian explains.

You head into town and find it seems even busier than last time. There aren't as many traders coming and going, but a lot of locals are out and about, and many traders seem to have stopped here for a break. The card hall you head to is completely packed. It looks like it'll be hard to even find a table.
"So, uh... What do we... do?" Darius asks. Looks like there's a few stands to swap money for chips, but most people seem to just be using cash. And with so many people coming and going, you have your pick of games if you're patient. "I don't really know how to play much 'sides gin rummy 'n' go fish."

You wait while Darius looks around for a moment before selecting a poker table near the wall that seems to be playing with relatively cheap wagers.
"Uh, howdy. We're, uh... y'mind dealin' us in?"
The two of you play a few hands, and it seems like Darius is surprisingly good at this game. You almost think he was lying earlier about not having played before.

You head into the town and into a small library not far from the school. The old lady at the counter glances up from a tome as you as you enter, glances past Colette to stare at you for a moment, then returns to her book as Colette strolls past her. She takes your hand and pulls you down a small aisle without looking at the signs. You notice her steps are strangely silent, and she seems to glide more than walk. She runs her free hand across the books as you pass before finally sliding one out and handing it you. She leads you to a small group of chairs by a dim, dusty window. She takes a seat without saying anything.
You look at the book. It has a picture of a young woman in a vibrant, bright outfit covered with lace and carrying a small wand. "Magical Girls: History and Role in Modern Magecraft." It looks a bit on the old side. It's probably all history now.

Indy laughs cheerfully. "ah, youre a riot bro. i had to pick up what little skill i got in cards on the streets. definitely made my good ol pops and ma blow a gasket a time or too. they mostly taught me about cookin and runnin the restaurant."

After looking over the back cover Rishan nods at Colette "Thank you" She takes out her notebook and flips further back from where she started transcribing runes. Rishan skims the book particularly looking for any mention of espionage or intelligence uses of Magical Girls

You play a few more hands. It's not long before Darius' beginner's luck breaks. At the end of the day, he breaks even while you come out a few coin richer. If there were some kind of arbitrary MONEY system, it would probably be enough for +2 MONEY, but there is not.
Rishan
You look through a bit about Magical Girl history. Throughout the years and across many different cultures and regions, the closest matches had different names and specialties. The current day Magical Girl largely incorporates elements taken from classical Bards, Wilders, Blasters, and Evokers. In terms of espionage, Magical Girls are, with one exception, absolutely useless. They are loud, bright, flashy, and love to be the center of attention. There have been a few cases of Magical Girls finding success as spies by taking advantage of this. Spies serving as court jesters and musicians, wandering minstrels, and even becoming famous actors and the like.
As you read, Colette focuses intently on her book. She occasionally glances up at you, then immediately back down.

When Rishan is satisfied with their notes she takes out a cloth and wipes some dust from the window. "So what are you reading?" They ask next time Colette's eyes wander from her book
